There was a time when I travelled to Europe and America, happily using my iPhone and blackberry checking emails and websites. When I got back to my home country, I was shocked to see bills totaling more than $10,000! These were mostly for data usage ie Internet access! It was utterly shocking what the bills were.
So here are some creative ways to save on these ridiculous data roaming bills. Your local telco will charge you for the convinience of using your local phone but man do you pay for it!
First, make sure you have 2 phones. I have an iphone 4 and a blackberry. Let me explain:
I used to use a blackberry all the time but the telcos always charge extra for blackberry usage. The only benefit that I saw was using blackberry messenger. Now with Whatsapp, blackberries and iPhones can communicate. Whatsapp for iPhone is 0.99 cents and free for blackberries. You can download Whatsapp for iPhone from the App store and on the blackberry go to AppWorld. For Android phones it should be available on the store as well, just search for it. I am not sure about Symbian and Windows phones.
So after figuring out that using an iPhone or even an Android phone for emails and browsing was cheaper (as you don’t have to pay for the BIS Blackberry Internet Service) and the screens were bigger to read documents and emails, I ditched the blackberry data plan. My blackberry is my main local phone with no data plan. I like to use it as the keyboard is tactile and I can still write smses faster with my blackberry rather than my touchscreen iPhone. While I do not encourage texting while driving, it is faster and more efficient with a keyboard you can actually feel and you don’t have to look at. You can feel the keys and since it is a QWERTY keyboard, I know where all the keys are by feel.
So I keep my blackberry as my main phone and my iPhone as my travel phone. Besides, the iPhone has more apps and is much better to play games on!
Now here is the secret. The secret that will savd you thousands of dollars while you are in other countries.
First, buy a local sim card that has voice and data, then stick that into your iPhone. Of course you have to make sure that your iPhone is unlocked. If it is not, there are programs online which can do it for you, just google “how to unlock iPhone” real easy actually.
Don’t answer calls using your home phone. I usually call back using my new local sim card which is in my iPhone, or I send them an sms or text message. They can call my new local number or I can call them using then local sim card in the phone.
Here is the beauty of using an iPhone. With the current os, you can set your iPhone as a wifi router and connect up to 5 devices! So your iPad, tablet and laptop, no problem!!
On android phones, there is a wifi router app on the android store, just search for it.
When you use up all your credit, just top up. Too easy!
There is one very important part left, and that is that not all prepaid sim cards come in the micro sim format needed for iPhones. No problem. You can either cut it with scissors or use a micro sim cutter like the one here. If you want to buy one, email me info@motavi.com

The lesson is in Real Estate and I will share what I learnt from this episode at the end of this article.
The story goes like this:
My wife wanted us to buy our own place as we were living with my Father. I could understand this so off we went house hunting.
Now the interesting part is that my wife kept on complaining about every single house we visited. There was always something wrong with it. Too noisy, too small, bad feng shui, bad neighbors, not enough wind etc etc etc. To be frank, I was getting quite fed up of her complaints.
I was doing all of the searching and she was doing all of the complaining.
Well enough was enough (so I thought). I found a nice 5000 sq foot house. It had a garden, it was reasonably priced. It was freehold. We both had cars and she had Oreo (a lovely dog). So of course we both have to be able to park our cars and Oreo needs space to run around.
And all the houses she did like cost a few million, which at the time, I just didn’t have.
So I stood my ground and put a deposit on the house. That’s right. I put down a cool $64k. Cold, hard cash.
Then she started to complain. She said she wouldn’t be happy there. It was too near the main road, too noisy. Bad area.
Uh oh.
Then I spoke to the banks, they could not get me the loan on the purchase amount. It seems that I didn’t do my homework as the house was not worth that much!
Uh oh.
Then I spoke to the owner and asked if I could get the deposit back. No was the answer. According to the contract which I signed, using the agent’s lawyer, I was fully responsible for the full amount and if i did not proceed with the purchase, my deposit was to be forfeited.
Oh.
So at the end of it all and after much argument and deliberation with my wife, we decided not to proceed with the purchase of the house.
I could tell that even though she reluctantly agreed to move in, it would create a lot of disharmony between us and what is more valuable than the special relationship between your life partner? Money cannot buy that.
So. What did I learn from this? Let me share. Please read carefully and learn from my mistakes.
1. When buying a property, look at as many as you can. Get a feel for it. When you have narrowed your choice to a few, keep on investigating.
2. When you feel an urge to buy right now, STOP! Calm down and think. You will thank yourself (and me) later.
3. Drive around the area a few times. Get familiar with the neighborhood. Is it too noisy? Can you see yourself living here?
4. Make sure your other half is very sure he/she wants to live here. If he/she has anything negative to say, leave and look for another property. There are so many around. Eliminate the feeling that you will lose out if you don’t purchase now.
5. Ask your bank officer or bank for an estimated valuation of the property you intend to purchase. Your results might shock you. The price could be way off the asking price. Then try to figure out how much your repayments are and the percentage of loan that the bank is willing to extend to you.
6. Don’t forget to ask how much the maintenance charges are (apartment) per month or quit rent/ land assessment fees for the year (house).
7. Make sure that you use your OWN lawyer. Try not to use the agent’s or the seller’s lawyer. It will cost you a little more but you will save HEAPS of money. Trust me. $64k is gone because of this. Make sure that there is a clause in the contract that lets you get your money back if you cannot get the loan – some sellers may not agree to this but try. And pay the deposit to your lawyer, never to the agent or seller.
So there you have it. I sincerely hope that these lessons save you more than $64,000.

I had the rare privilege of listening to top football team Arsenal’s coach, Arsene Wenger speak about team management and motivation.
Arsene is arguably one of the most successful football coaches of all time. His claim to fame is spotting young, inexperienced, unknown and “cheap” talent which he moulds into powerhouses and sometimes then sold to another team for a huge profit. Well, I guess the motive is not always to actually sell these star players to other teams but to bring up their potential and spot talent which others have not yet or are incapable of seeing.
An interesting point he made is that there is talent amongst us but when not given the chance, how does one develop?
He states the case about Formula 1. He mentions Africa as an example about how there would definitely be someone there who could drive an F1 car and be competitive but no one is given the chance.
I think about Nadal, the super tennis star player who was encouraged to use his left hand to play, as left handed players have a strategic advantage as 90% of tennis players are right handed. Was Nadal spotted by his Uncle that he had talent, or was he made into the super power tennis beast that he is now? Most would argue both – but the case here is that his Uncle saw potential in him and coached him. Where would he be today if not for his Uncle? Where would some of the famous Arsenal players be today if not for Arsene Wenger?
Motivation
He talks about getting people out of their comfort zone. The problem with most people is the consistency in the desire. How bad to do you want it? Careers are made out of those with tenacity in the desire. Not necessarily the most intelligent. I can relate to this as I didn’t get A grades or a degree with a distinction. For me personally, it has been a continuous, consistent burning desire to get ahead in life and achieve the success I so most desire.
An interesting point he mentioned was that sometimes players would go up to him and ask ” How am I doing?” His curt reply is “you know better than I do”
He likes to mention that a little butterfly in our stomach tells us where we stand. You know where you stand in whatever arena you are inquiring about. Look in the mirror and that person will tell you all you need to know.
Managing People
The best players or people according to Arsene is those who can express themselves almost perfectly while experiencing stress. He continues that the more resistance to stress under pressure is what separates the great from the good. In the face of adversity, challenges and disaster, a true person’s character will show. Step out of the issue and how well you handle it says many things about the person you are.
Inhibition is the enemy of top level sportspeople.
With a big ego, how far can you go? He says that he wants to do something with the talent that one may possess. In the sports world, one cannot slack.
More interesting points he makes is that you forget how good you are when you lose. This effect in a team can potentially be contagious. One needs to be dynamic, flexible and make on-the-fly changes. Don’t forget how good you are.
Emotions get in the way of performance and success. There are time when you will lose but you want to reduce the amount of times that you lose. Human beings get into a comfort zone when all things go well and this is a problem. One needs to remove all negative emotions – realign your emotions.
Star Players – Star Talent
The superstar on the field or at the workplace will give you the impression that you need him more than he needs you. Arsene says that you must never lose control of your company and even if this person has the qualities, if he disrupts the company and culture, then he must be removed immediately.
On Money
Money is the consequence of your quality. The quality of your job, the quality of your product and/or service will in turn dictate how much money comes as a result of that. Arsene says that you should make your life as beautiful as you can. Ask yourself everyday “what can I do to make something beautiful?”
Once you arise from bed each morning, do as well as you possibly can. The money will come.
On Yourself
Anger is directed at ourselves. When you make a wrong decision and you feel angry, you ask yourself why you made such a decision. Then you feel angry – it can be conscious or unconscious. Be rigorous with yourself, be ruthless with yourself.
On Experience
Experience is the potential to anticipate problems before they happen. To be able to see the problem before it happens and then to prevent it.
These are some of the key points I took home from Arsene Wenger’s talk that day. I learnt a lot of things and I hope that by sharing this with you, you learn something as well.
